The minor in Vietnamese (Tiếng Việt) encompasses three basic modules which convey to students skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Vietnamese is the national language of Vietnam and is spoken as a native language by about 85 million people. This makes it the most widely spoken language of Mainland Southeast Asia. Linguistically, Vietnamese is a tonal and monosyllabic language, and belongs to the Mon Khmer or Austroasiatic languages. The minor introduces students to the grammar and basic skills necessary for everyday communication, and later prepares them to read specialized and academic texts. This subject must be combined with a second subject. Possible career paths include intercultural communication, international development cooperation, peace and conflict research, international educational work, politics, culture management, tourism, journalism, and academia.
