📋 Program Hakkında
The theoretical education at an art college presents a challenge to scientific theory and practice, as it tests their possible relevance for practical application. Scientific foundations of design are not an end in themselves to ennoble art and design, but represent a bridge between thoughtless product design, mindless genius aesthetics, and the scientific ivory tower. The goal is to continuously develop a specific form of scientific work as a pragmatic theory for art and design. This will likely be oriented towards a complex problem awareness rather than a normative idea of a binding canon of scientific content in design. The subject 'Aesthetics' at Muthesius University of Fine Arts aims to critically summarize the individual theoretical areas of art and design studies, including art and design history, communication and media theory, supplemented by general aesthetics and art sociology. In addition to introductory courses and basic seminars, current issues from design practice are considered. The goal is to develop students' ability to reflect on and justify their own projects, as well as competently assess their own creative work. The teaching aims at competent handling of results from different reference sciences, without neglecting the meaningful difference between creative-design thinking and scientific approaches. The university's offering is complemented by a regular seminar on media theory for all courses of study, covering topics ranging from media philosophy, photo and film history to the aesthetics of new digital media.
