The Economics (Volkswirtschaftslehre) program offers an excellent foundation for those interested in politics, society, and economics to deepen their knowledge and judgment on topics in these areas. It addresses questions such as how to combat inflation and unemployment, how economic and financial crises arise, how to efficiently protect the environment, the effects of minimum wages and rent caps, the tasks of the European Central Bank, problems of globalization and demographic change, and how to manage the Euro debt crisis. The social science of economics works with mathematical methods and models to explain the interaction of individuals, companies, and states, focusing on how people respond to economic incentives. Quantitative methods of statistics and econometrics are used to empirically test macroeconomic relationships and create forecasts. Students can choose from specializations including: Quantitative Economic Research, Demographic Change, Labor and Social Affairs, Macroeconomics and Financial System, and European Economy. The program features a first-semester lecture series introducing all departments with current topics, covers philosophical aspects of economics and the history of economic thought, teaches scientific work in a special lecture, and offers great freedom of choice regarding lectures and seminars.
