The Bachelor's minor in Journalism and Communication Science provides fundamental knowledge of journalism (i.e., research related to journalism) and communication science (research on public, media communication), including research findings, major theories, and central research methods. Students engage with essential questions about the production, reception, and impact of media communication and learn to address these independently and in a problem-oriented manner. The program focuses on mediated communication relevant to a democratic public sphere: particularly journalism, political communication, as well as science, climate, and environmental communication, which today largely take place in the digital space. The minor program aims to enable students from various disciplines to understand the significance of (digitally) mediated communication for their respective major subjects, resulting career fields, and society as a whole, to critically contextualize it, and to develop a confident approach to it. The minor also prepares students for the M.A. in Journalism and Communication Science at the University of Hamburg. The minor in Journalism and Communication Science takes a scholarly perspective on journalism and other forms of public communication. It is not an introduction to practical journalistic or media work.
