This lecture introduces urban design and urban planning, providing an overview of the historical development of the modern metropolis throughout the history of cities. Students acquire knowledge about the diverse forces that play a role in shaping the built environment, including social, political, and economic factors, and the impacts of urban structures on society. A central theme will be the transition from scientific and functionalist approaches to a critique of modernist urban planning from within the discipline, as well as the connection with other arts and theories. Urban space is treated as an epistemological structure with an indicative function in the overview of social paradigms and structures. Along central concepts of architectural and urbanism history, discursive formations will be discussed in parallel with concrete case studies. This will range from historical topics such as the invention of the profession of architect in the Renaissance, the establishment of urban planning as a science especially in the 19th century, or the boundary between private and public spaces of early modernism, to functionalism discussions and urban utopias of modernism and their criticism from the mid-20th century.
