Biology is an integrative natural science that requires interest in living nature and basic knowledge in mathematics (statistics), physics, and chemistry. The Bachelor's program provides comprehensive theoretical and practical training in all biological disciplines. The first two semesters cover fundamental knowledge in mathematics, physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, cytology, and biochemistry. Semesters 3 and 4 provide advanced training in physiology, ecology, evolutionary biology, genetics, biotechnology, microbiology, systematic botany, and zoology. From the 5th semester, students can choose one of the following specializations: Biochemistry, Botany, Genetics, Landscape Ecology, Microbiology, Ecology, Physiology, or Zoology. The program concludes after six semesters with a Bachelor's thesis in the chosen specialization and an oral final examination. Early involvement of students in ongoing research projects is important to the faculty. The study leads to a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree after three years. The research focus of the biological institutes is molecular biology, infectiology, physiology, and ecology.
