Securing a sustainable energy future requires an energy transition that calls for a new generation of dedicated engineers and researchers capable of developing, optimizing and integrating sustainable energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy and energy from biomass. Since these energy sources are only available on an irregular basis, energy storage is a key success factor. This requires innovative batteries and the integration of hydrogen as an energy carrier. These and other new technologies must be integrated into existing power grids and market structures. The design of new forms of energy distribution, energy market structures and smart grids is necessary to sustainably meet the energy needs of modern societies.
