The Bachelor's program 'Risk and Security Management' (RSM) was established in 2006 by the University of Public Administration Bremen in response to the increasing importance of security issues in government, business, and society. The program prepares students for management tasks in supply, transport and corporate security, the security industry, and municipal crisis management. This scientifically based and practice-oriented program trains competitive professionals for active, innovative, and holistic risk and security management. Risk and Security Managers develop complex strategies and concepts to protect people (such as employees or visitors), tangible assets (such as buildings or machines), and intangible assets (such as information and ideas). Their work is primarily conceptual and strategic rather than operational, distinguishing them from police or security guards. The role may involve on-site property assessments or discussions with stakeholders at different locations, sometimes globally. The demand for these broadly trained specialists is growing due to increasing security challenges from climate change, wars, organized crime, and financial crises. The program is structured across 6 semesters, with the first three semesters covering various aspects of the profession, a 5-month internship in the fourth semester at an organization of choice (with possibilities for international placements), advanced studies in the fifth semester, and the bachelor thesis in the sixth semester. The program features small class sizes (approximately 30 students per year), a fixed schedule, and a combination of professors and practitioners as instructors, providing both scientific expertise and practical application. Regular industry presentations, conferences, and alumni meetings facilitate networking with potential employers.
