The Theory Department at Merz Akademie focuses on enabling conceptual and theory-supported work across disciplines in the context of increasing digital convergence. Cultural Theory at Merz Akademie is committed to the idea of authorship in the fields of art, design, and media. The program emphasizes that in digital culture, one works not only with predefined tools on communicative or artistic tasks but also on the tools themselves. The curriculum is divided into three main theoretical fields: Aesthetic Theory, Cultural Theory, and Art History, with a general introduction to scholarly thinking and working in the first semester. The program prepares students to become 'authors in design, art, and media' by familiarizing them with fundamental contemporary discourses and sensitizing them to contemporary trends in the mixing of free and applied arts.
