The Bachelor's program 'African Languages, Media and Communication' (Asmek) follows the guiding principle of sociolinguistic, media linguistic and structural linguistic basic education with reference to African languages. A central component of this program is practical language training in two languages, including an African language over a period of two years, to impart basic communication skills, as well as the acquisition of important overview knowledge in various relevant areas of linguistic-cultural production in Africa and the African diaspora. This includes knowledge of language diversity, basic cultural and linguistic historical guidelines, and especially current social and technological-media framework conditions of (offline and online) communication in African languages. The program aims to teach fundamental African linguistic analysis methods from transcription techniques and the evaluation of ethnographic data to the sociolinguistic description of human communication behavior to discourse-analytical and intercultural interpretation. The overarching goal of the broad-based content offering is to combine African linguistic practice with relevant content from sociolinguistics, digital and intercultural communication. This program, which addresses modern social topics such as digital media and intercultural communication in Africa and combines them with structural linguistic training and the acquisition of African language skills, was designed in cooperation with the Institute for Ethnology and African Studies (IfEAS) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
