The additional subject Master's in the German Language (Teaching Degree) comprises the subject areas of German Linguistics, German Medieval Studies, Modern German Literature (NDL) and subject-specific pedagogy. Linguistics teaches the ability to analyze substantive language material, starting from the phonetic and writing systems to syntax up to the level of semantics. Literary studies offer theories and methods for analyzing and interpreting German-language texts dating from the Early Middle Ages down to the present. In subject-specific pedagogy, prospective teachers are coached on how to teach German in the classroom. The additional subject Master's degree is always studied in conjunction with standard teaching degree studies. The Master's lets students achieve the right to teach a third subject.
