Molecular Biology is the science of living matter, from plants and animals to microorganisms and borderline cases like viruses. It deals with living organisms and life processes at the subcellular, molecular level. The program covers the general laws of living things and the peculiarities of individual organisms (development, structure, relationship to the environment, physical-biochemical processes inside). The levels of observation include molecules, cells and cell associations, organelles, tissues and organs, the behavior of individual organisms, and their interaction with other living beings and their environment. Students acquire basic knowledge in biology and related basic sciences such as chemistry, physics, and mathematics, followed by specialized knowledge in molecular biology. The program includes numerous laboratory internships and exercises. Key research areas include using microorganisms for producing life-saving medications, biofuels, environmental remediation, or food and beverage production and processing; preventing or fighting diseases caused by errors in genetic information; and understanding aging processes.
