This seminar explores the work of Marcel Duchamp, focusing on the concept of opposing poles creating interaction, which plays an essential role in his work. Duchamp used this principle when signing as his female alter ego Rrose Selavy and in his understanding of art, where he views artists and recipients as the 'two poles of any art creation'. The seminar will first develop an insight into Duchamp's diverse oeuvre, examining the Magneto-Principle in relation to individual motifs and different approaches to works or types of works. In a further step, the art understanding in which viewers are considered significant participants in art creation will be examined in more detail. Using Duchamp and his oeuvre as an example, an abstract principle can be examined in its consequences and manifestations, discussing questions such as the emancipatory potential of art viewing.
