Physics is an elemental branch of the natural sciences that focuses on the structure of matter and the fundamental interactions between the components of the observable universe. Students in the Physics academic programme focus on natural processes that are accessible to experimental exploration, measurement, and mathematical representation, and which are subject to universal laws. The Master's programme in Physics at Heidelberg University is research-oriented and provides students with in-depth specialist knowledge and understanding of scientific methods employed in physics. The goal of the master's program is to provide an in-depth, research-oriented education in physics as well as a general basic knowledge of important scientific methods. The program consists of two semesters of classes (lectures, seminars) followed by a one-year research phase culminating in a Master thesis. The Master's program is characterized by a very broad range of courses, which gives each student the opportunity to tailor their studies according to their own preferences. Students may acquire specialized expertise in areas adjacent to physics, depending on which courses they choose. The master's degree is intended as a preparatory degree necessary to subsequently begin doctoral studies.
