The bachelor's program takes the compositional foundations of Western music as a starting point to provide an initial overview of the field of musicology, which is combined from the outset with a methodological grounding. Research and teaching at the department focuses on the area of historical music research, which is concerned primarily with the creation, notation, appearance, rendition, performance, function, and impact of works from the history of European music. It includes music philology, musical analysis, the study of historical performance practice, biography, historical characterizations of music in their cultural and social context, reception research, and the historical development of music theory, aesthetics, and musical terminology. The program covers four main areas: Musical analysis and historic music theory; Notation, the language of music, and music publishing; The intellectual, cultural and social history context of European music; and Aesthetic and philosophical approaches to music and its historic development.

* Excellent German language skills required
* Good skills in English and one other foreign language required
* Familiarity with the basic principles of music theory required
* Prior practical experience with music required
* Experience with composition required
* Ability to form a mental picture of music just by reading sheet music required
* Basic knowledge of the history of music and musical repertoire required
