The Sound department as part of exMedia is dedicated to a broad spectrum of sound-related work. It focuses on the questions: What do we hear? How do we hear? How can we shape what we hear? And in what contexts does this take place? Working with sound opens up many possibilities - from digital to analog, electronic and mechanical approaches, in sound synthesis and audiovisual material research, conceptually, transdisciplinary, media-archaeological and socio-political. The department includes a sound laboratory and sound studio, atelier and workshop. Besides a changing range of theory and practice seminars and workshops, the department offers an annual "Sound Fundamentals Seminar" as an introduction to the diverse topics for interested students who have little or no experience with sound. This seminar always takes place in the summer semester. The Sound department also curates and organizes the "soundings" series in the KHM auditorium, which presents outstanding and extraordinary artistic positions between music, sound art and lecture-performance in three events per semester.
